Year 10 Trip


The Year 10 students went on a graphics trip to the Royal College of Art to learn more about improving ideas and developing from them. They also acquired the skill of getting ideas from secondary sources and using them to improve their own work. They had to go around the exhibition at the college and collect ideas from whatever was on display. The images show what the boys did.

Detailed artist research carried out. Their work is analysed and considered in response to the idea of identity. Also used for inspiration on media experimentation; Boldini and Trojnarski could inspire sewing into an image.







Artists styles are used when producing direct observational drawings, in this case a self portrait.




Beginning to look at media experimentation. An artist style is considered both through paint and a pen drawing.

Experimenting with different media; above is a monoprint on tissue paper relating to an artists work.

The student here has sewn into an image of himself. On the left hand page is a collage where photography and drawing are fused. 




Beginning to come up with designs for the final piece, still very much experimenting with media.

Various techniques were explored. Wax resist, Polyblock printing, mono printing etc





Sewing was used to highlight details, and draw designs on to existing images. The contrast in techniques and surface provides interest in the piece.






Design Development






Ideas are worked through. Throughout the design process, the students are constantly experimenting, changing ideas and the methods used to produce various results.










Ideas are honed down.







Final ideas are constructed ready to begin the creation of the final piece.

Preliminary Work


The students begin by throwing out ideas, one leading to the other, assessing what the project could offer, and what avenues could be explored.

Experimenting and Design go hand in hand, all that has been learned by this point through the observational drawings, secondary studies and artist research is being used. Added to this the student begins experimenting with different mediums, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each exploration against his fledgling ideas.














Constant questioning of the work is needed: Here the students assess his achievements up until this date and his wishes for the work in the future.










Design Development Continued



Here the student is working through a variety of ideas. His research into Richter's work is proving useful at this point.
